Kathleen Jessie Hatlelid (née Horner)
December 17, 1923 - May 3, 2023
Kathleen Jessie Hatlelid (née Horner), born December 17, 1923 at Creelman, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully May 3, 2023 at Shaughnessy Care Centre in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.
Dearly loved and fondly remembered by her children Doug (Margaret) Hatlelid, Betty (Steve) MacKenzie, Keith (Anne) Hatlelid, Len (Sharon) Hatlelid, and David Hatlelid, sister Beth Hatlelid, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Kathleen was predeceased by her husband Wesley, by her brothers Harold, Leslie, and Frederick Horner, by her sisters Marion Nodwell and Audrey Denison, and by her grandson Eric Hatlelid.
Kathleen grew up on a Saskatchewan farm near Creelman, the sixth of seven children born to parents Norval and Jessie Horner. After completing high school in Creelman she attended Regina Normal School. After only one year of training at the age of 18 she was sent to teach school at a Ukrainian settlement near Punnichy, SK, followed by a teaching position at a one-room schoolhouse at Crieff. She later worked as a secretary for the United Church of Canada in Regina before moving to Saskatoon in 1945 to attend the University of Saskatchewan, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948 alongside her sister Beth. That same year she met the love of her life, partner and soul mate Wes, whom she wed in 1950. The couple spent the next 69 years together, raising five children in a happy and loving home. After their marriage the couple lived in Flin Flon, MB, followed by moves with their growing family to rural Alberta, Edmonton, Dawson Creek, Houston, and finally Calgary. After Wes’ passing in 2019, Kathleen moved to BC in 2020 to be close to her family on the West Coast.
Kathleen was an active and generous member of the United Church her entire life. She was also a tireless volunteer well into her 80’s, volunteering at many organizations including the Bissell Centre in Edmonton, The Calgary Food Bank, The Canadian Red Cross, and Calgary Meals on Wheels, for which she delivered meals for over 25 years.
Her many interests included traveling the world with her husband, golf, bridge, curling, lawn bowling and time with family. She loved entertaining friends and family at dinner parties where there was always an abundance of games, music and laughter. One of her favorite pastimes was walking in Fish Creek Park where she delighted in feeding chickadees alongside her grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Shaughnessy Care Centre staff for their loving care of our mom, grandma, great-grandma, aunt, and friend.
Donations in Kathleen’s memory may be made to Calgary Food Bank or the Mustard Seed.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Kathleen Hatlelid will be held at 11:00am on Monday, July 3, 2023 at McDougall United Church
