Obituary
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Charlie Marshall, husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle, and friend. He passed away suddenly in his home on Sunday, June 30th at the age of 84 years old. He is lovingly remembered by all who knew him, especially his beloved wife of 61 years, Vivien, their three children Tara (Rick) Black, Craig Marshall, Tanis (Rob Parks) Marshall, grandchildren Emily and Carly Black, and siblings Ron (Cherry) Marshall, Faye (Paul) Boyko and Zelda (Ron Inkster) Marshall, along with the rest of his extended family. He was deeply loved and predeceased by parents Clayton and Olive Marshall.
Charlie was born and grew up at the family farm near Somme, Saskatchewan. He loved the farm and his family, but he had dreams of the big city. So, off he went to the University of Saskatchewan where he received his Civil Engineering degree in 1961 and became a Professional Engineer in Saskatoon. He then met his better half, Vivien, and they were married in 1963. Their three children filled their lives, with Charlie always supporting them in swimming, scouts and other pursuits.
Charlie’s career took many turns; first as a concrete engineer that moved the family to Calgary, Alberta, which became their home for 50 years. It was there he realized he had a penchant for entrepreneurism, first pursuing building contracting, then financial advising and accounting in his later years.
Deeply committed to the church, Charlie spent many years serving God and his community at McDougall United Church. He volunteered extensively there and was instrumental in a major expansion. With the rest of his spare time, he also loved to garden, golf, bowl, curl, travel, and spend time with his grandchildren.
Charlie was loyal, committed, hardworking, generous, and loving. His family meant everything to him. He was quiet in nature but was the ‘life of the party’ in group settings with friends and family.
Thank you for the support received from family, friends, medical professionals and caregivers through years of health struggles, and especially Vivien for her endless care to ensure he was able to live in their home to the end.
A Celebration of Charlie’s Life will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Monday, July 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow.
The service will be streamed live at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_7mplguk2NAKiZ0zRl8iMg or search McDougall United Church YouTube, for those who are unable to attend in person.
