GARDNER, Sheila (nee Wishart)
June 21, 1926 – Glasgow, Scotland
March 30, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Sheila Gardner of Calgary, passed away in the amazing and caring community of Agape Hospice on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the age of 87 years. This wee lassie was born in Glasgow, Scotland to Willie and Jane on June 21, 1926. She grew up in the area of Newton Mearns in the loving Wishart family, along with Muriel, Crawford and Jean. Mum served as a WRN for the British Forces. Sheila immigrated to Canada with her family in 1947. She settled in Calgary and met Ted Gardner in 1951 at the Bowness Golf Course. They were engaged six weeks later and were married in 1952. Mum and Dad lived in Red Deer, Edmonton and then again in Calgary. They raised Barry and I in a wonderful home that always welcomed friends and family. We all loved our time with the 7th Street gang and have very fond memories – oh the stories and the parties! Golfing, bridge, lawn bowling, walking around Calgary, having lunch with girl friends, McDougall Ladies group, and most importantly volunteering at the Calgary Food Bank kept Mum busy when she retired. In her last few years Mum lived at Lake Bonavista Village. She spread her quiet Scottish charm in her own way here as well. Mum was determined to do it her way and be as independent as possible. A very special thank you and recognition to all the medical people throughout Mum's life. Dr. Helen Montgomery and the team at Signal Hill Medical Centre – you provided more than medicine to the Gardner Girls. If you would like to honour my wee Mum, please do so as she requested, as Mum was very clear on the charities that were special to her. Memorial tributes may be made directly to the Inn from the Cold, at McDougall United Church, The Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank Society, 5000 – 11 Street S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 2Y5 (Phone 403-253-2059, www.calgaryfoodbank.com) or something to help the wee kiddies. Remember her baby blue eyes, her lovely Scottish accent, her determination, her kind nature, her honesty, her hospitality and her smile. Your loving daughter, Ann. A Celebration of Life will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street S.E.) on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.
