BURGHER, David Fulton
November 11, 1941 - August 8, 2012


It is with great sadness we announce that David Fulton Burgher passed away after a short illness on Wednesday, August 8, 2012. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who tirelessly provided his time and effort to countless amounts of people that came into his life. This was especially characterized in his teaching as well as his exemplary community service. Besides his loving wife Catharina (Cathy) Burgher, David will also be greatly missed by his children, Jannet (Lenworth) Burgher, Sonja (Ricky) Burgher, Norman Burgher, Jim Ross, Michelle (Dan) Willis; grandchildren, Monique Smith, Jessica Willis, Joseph Willis; siblings, Kenneth (Sissy) Burgher, Rowland Burgher, Leslie Burgher, Betsy Henry, Glenn (Luna) Burgher, Jean (Val) Williams, Ruth (Clive) West, Doreth (Gladstone) Roach, Marie (Joe) Clarke and numerous nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by parents Elvira and Altiman Burgher, sister Joyce Brown and brother Bromley Burgher. David's career was complemented by his efforts to promote intercultural education, the positive attributes of multiculturalism and respect for diversity, as vital lessons for the students he helped prepare to be good global citizens. During his many years of involvement with Calgary communities, David served as President of the Calgary Multicultural Centre, was a Director of the Calgary Committee to Promote Good Citizenship, a member of the Canada Day Celebrations Committee, member of the Board of Directors of the Volunteer Centre of Calgary, and a member of the Provincial Multicultural Advisory Council. David was awarded the CITY OF CALGARY CENTENNIAL AWARD OF MERIT in 1990 for his "outstanding contribution to the enrichment of life in Calgary", and CANADA'S 125th ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL in 1992 for his "significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada". Funeral Service will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street S.E.) on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.
