Artist Studio Time: Lent / Holy Week Art Installation

Lenten Holy Week Art Installation - Call for Artists
$0.00

Calling All Artists: Bring Lent to Life Through Art!

Join us this Lent season for a unique and reflective journey of creativity and faith with our Lent Art Walk-Through. Whether you're a seasoned artist or simply looking for a new way to express your faith, we invite you to participate in this collaborative experience. Your art will be part of a powerful exhibit displayed at two locations during Holy Week and Easter!

How to Participate

We encourage all artists from different faith traditions, and the broader community, to join in! Running every Saturday from March 8th, through April 12, studio time will be available from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM at McDougall United, where you can create your piece(s) in community with others. Alternatively, you are welcome to work at home or mix both studio and at-home time to suit your needs. Art supplies will be provided in the studio, and for those working at home, supplies can be arranged upon request. In-person participants will also enjoy light snacks and coffee during the sessions.

The first hour of each Saturday session will include a Zoom meeting, and is open to all who are interested. During these meetings, in person and virtual participants will explore ways to interpret and image the scripture readings, engage in group discussions, and reflect on the key themes of Holy Week and Good Friday.  Zoom visitors are also welcome to simply listen to the discussions, offer ideas, or actively create artwork inspired by the scripture. In-person participants will also enjoy light snacks and coffee during the sessions.

Note that Rev. Danah will be using the beginning of the first session to give an overview of what we are hoping to do, and answer any questions you might have to help determine if this is an activity for you.

Once you express interest, you'll receive an email packet containing scripture readings, inspiring images, example artist statements, and focus questions. These resources are designed to guide you as you create a piece that visually reflects on the Lenten season. Your artwork can focus on any aspect of the Lent journey or Holy Week, with the aim of fostering deep reflection and engagement.

So, whether you are an artist looking to express your faith through visual art, or simply someone interested in guiding or observing the creative process, this walk-through offers many ways to participate. This is an opportunity to express yourself creatively, deepen your engagement with Lent, and be part of a reflective and collaborative community.

Submission Details

Any two-dimensional art is acceptable, this includes colleges, poetry, paintings, textile art, etc. The final collection of artwork will be showcased in an art walk-through exhibition. All completed artwork will need to be accompanied by a brief artist statement (due Thursday, April 10th), which can describe what inspired your piece or provide context about the work itself. All artwork must be dropped off by Saturday, April 12th. Further details will be provided in the packet you receive upon expressing interest.

Whether you are eager to explore a new artistic medium, deepen your spiritual reflection, or simply want to contribute to this beautiful community project, we encourage you to reach out! If you have any questions or need guidance, Rev. Danah is available throughout the Lent season on Saturdays to assist and support you.

Don't miss this opportunity to express yourself, engage with scripture, and contribute to a meaningful, community-wide celebration of Lent and Easter. Reach out today to learn more!

The Exhibit

The art exhibit will be set up in the Chapel at Red Deer Lake for Palm Sunday (April 13) and will be available for viewing from Monday to Thursday, 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM. Afterward, the exhibit will be transported to the McDougall Chapel, where it will be available to view before and after the Good Friday Service, on Holy Saturday (12:00 PM - 3:00 PM), and on Easter Sunday.
