A Good Man Who Loved People

April 23, 1935 – Chamcook, New Brunswick
June 4, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Glen Johnston, beloved husband of Joan Johnston of Calgary, passed away on June 4, 2018 at the age of 83 years.

Glen was born near St. Andrews, New Brunswick and was the middle of five children. He attended Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick, where he excelled academically, participated in student government, and set new Atlantic records in track and field.  After graduation (BSc in Geology), Glen came to Calgary to work for Imperial Oil as a geophysicist.  He worked in Dawson Creek, BC, Edmonton and Calgary and retired in Calgary in 1990.  Glen had a lifelong love of golf – starting out as a caddy in St. Andrews and playing the game for most of his life.  He was involved with Willowridge Lacrosse, managing one team to a national championship.  Glen enjoyed travel, golf, friends in retirement, and the Esso Annuitants Club where he served as a board member and president, and Glen and Joan spent many hours with these wonderful retired friends.

Glen is survived by Joan (his wife of almost 60 years) and two children, Susan Heather Raleigh and Richard Stuart (Jari Hickey) Johnston and six grandchildren: Natasha, Thomas, Matthew, and Shelby Raleigh, and Kyle and McKenna Johnston.  He adored his grandchildren, took a keen interest in their activities and accomplishments, and they will miss their “Grandpa”.  Glen also leaves to mourn his loss, his sister Marilyn (Joe) Corbin and his sister-in-law Mary Nickerson of Fredericton.  He will also be missed by nieces, nephews and friends from all across Canada.  He was predeceased by brothers Kenneth “Bud” and Wayne; sister Joyce; and brother-in-law Charles Nickerson.

He was an active member of McDougall United Church, serving on  boards and committees, and will be fondly remembered by many wonderful friends there.

The family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and caregivers at South Health Campus who cared so lovingly for Glen in the last three weeks.

A Memorial Service will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Joanne Anquist officiating.  Reception to follow in the Hospitality Hall.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the McDougall United Church Scholarship Fund (8516 Athabasca Street SE, Calgary, AB T2H 1S1) or to the Tom Baker Cancer Society (1331 29 Street NW, Calgary, AB T2N 4N2).
