George Hogg
HOGG, George Stewart
September 16, 1920 – Saskatoon, SK
January 9, 2017 – Calgary, AB
George, beloved husband of the late Doris Roberta Hogg (nee Leach), of Calgary, AB, passed away on January 9, 2017 at the age of 96 years. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of our Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Grandpa. Born in Saskatoon, George grew up as the much-loved youngest in a family of 5 boys and a girl, born to Scottish immigrant parents. As a youth, he followed in the footsteps of his eldest brother Jim to become a champion track and field athlete and medal winner in the mile event. George joined WWII early as a Mosquito pilot with the Pathfinder 105 Squadron as one of only two Canadians to serve with that RAF squadron. He was re- assigned to Canada as a flight instructor, and then returned to the European Theatre toward the end of the war. At war's end, he served with the Calgary Police Service as a motorcycle officer for seven years before rejoining the RCAF in 1952. During his air force career, George and his family enjoyed postings across Canada, England and Europe. He retired from the military as a Squadron Leader in 1967. Following his retirement, George enjoyed an administrative career with the Canadian Red Cross in Edmonton and Calgary where he was the Commissioner for Alberta and Northwest Territories. George had an active service and social life as a member of Rotary International, the Calgary Aircrew Association, and McDougall United Church, where he served as a board member. He was a proud citizen of Calgary and volunteered for the 1988 Winter Olympics, organizing the flags for a number of medal ceremonies. He was a Renaissance man who could turn his hand to anything. He was a natural leader and generous with his time and energy to his many friends. George is survived by his daughters Marney (Jim Webster), Robbie (Terry Bobby) and Lori, dear friend of the family Margo Fearn, grandchildren Brad, Vanessa, Michael, David and Kerry, great- grandchildren Jayme, Matthew, Angelina, and Darius, step-grandchildren Olivia and Sophie, and many dear friends. George was predeceased by his parents James and Mary Hogg of Saskatoon, brothers and sister, his wife Doris, and son-in-law Terry Bobby. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Drs. Sturgeon and Tandon and clinic staff, Dr. F. Sepandj and staff of Southern Alberta Renal Program, staff and residents of The Chateau Renoir, and AHS home care staff. Funeral Services will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street S.E.) on Monday, January 23, 2017
