Choral Listening Series - Recording #7
Danny Boy, arr. Fred Weatherly (performed by the King's Singers)
My absolute favourite version of this classic. I hope you like it too.
The King's Singers are all men, as you may notice. This is not for sexist reasons, but rather to showcase the rarely-heard countertenor sound. A countertenor is a man who has a lower speaking voice, but sings exclusively in falsetto (kind of like I do in rehearsal sometimes to pitch higher notes, but much better than me). The King's Singers have two countertenors along with one tenor, one baritone, and two basses to create an SATTBB voicing on most of their music. Both countertenors are standing on the left. David Hurley is the lead countertenor (the shorter guy on the very left), and is renowned for his purity of sound and his ability to go much higher than the average countertenor. He retired from the group in 2014.
